It is essential for us to conduct election campaigns in preparation for the forthcoming election of members of the House of Representatives, and this year I have been concentrating on the campaigns more earnestly than ever. Local assemblies were held in Kasuga City and Nakagawa City respectively. I invited Mr. Takeshi Iwaya, Former Minister of Defense, to these assemblies as a guest lecturer. Mr. Iwaya and I were elected to the House of Representatives in 1990 (Heisei 2) for the first time. Both of us belong to the same faction in the Liberal Democratic Party and we get along very well. He served as Minister of Defense, and I as Minister of the Environment during the same period, from October 2018 to September 2019, under the Abe Cabinet. After I briefed my activities in the Diet, Mr. Iwaya explained about the status quo and issues of Japan’s defense policies in easy-to-understand terms, and supported my activities as a politician from the bottom of his heart.
I will continue to hold such assemblies for the next few weeks. During the preparation period for the forthcoming election, preparatory activities usually increase both in quality and in quantity. However, since the spread of coronavirus infections has not yet been controlled this year, ways to manage the assemblies have to be devised based on various measures. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your kind support.
