Yukichi Fukuzawa, born in Oita Prefecture, is famous as the founder of Keio University, and Shigenobu Okuma, born in Saga Prefecture, is famous as the founder of Waseda University. Tokujiro Shibata (1890-1973) was born and brought up in Bessho, Nakagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, which is located between the two forenamed prefectures. Nakagawa City belongs to my electorate district. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Shibata is famous as the founder of Kokushikan University. All these three prefectures are proud of their respective educationists who played great roles as pioneers in founding the schools which developed into influential universities in the modern history of Japan.
There is a monument of Tokujiro Shibata in the Central Community Hall of Nakagawa City. I sometimes visit this monument, and make it a habit to stand in front of the monument for a while, paying my respects to him. He left us with four virtues, ‘Sincerity, Labor, Insight, and Spirit’, and they are being carried down to the present day, providing us with guiding principles on how to live and act in our life to the fullest extent.
