The conflict between the US and Iran is complicated and tangled, and I was worried that in the worst-case scenario a war between the two countries could break out. However, it seems it could be avoided for the reasons mentioned below.
Iran’s Maj. Gen. Quasem Soleimani, the most powerful commander, was killed in a US drone strike near Baghdad Airport on January 3, 2020. Inevitably, the whole nation of Iran got ready for the retaliation against the US attack, and the Iranian military launched ballistic missiles on January 8 targeting US military bases in Iraq’s territory. The US government reported that there were no casualties.
Anticipating the US reattack, Iran was put on the highest alert level at that time, and it resulted in the catastrophe of the crash of a Ukrainian airliner near Teheran which occurred shortly after it took off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport on January 8. All 176 passengers and crew on board were killed.
The Iranian government initially claimed that the accident was caused by mechanical troubles, but finally, the Iranian government admitted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had shot down the aircraft by mistake. However, the Iranian government insisted that the conflict between the US and Iran was derived from President Trump’s hostile policy against Iran. Meanwhile, in Iran, thousands of protesters have demonstrated in many cities, blaming the Iranian authorities, as well as Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, for shooting down the Ukrainian airline. The political situation in Iran has become unstable.
In view of Iran’s suffering from the catastrophe of the crash of the Ukrainian airliner, the US government has responded to Iran in a constrained manner. Many countries including Japan are demanding both the US and Iran sides to hold negotiations through diplomatic efforts and not by military means. It goes without saying that among other things, it was the saddest thing that as many as 176 passengers and crew became the victims of the crash during the international conflict between Iran and the US.
I hope that the negotiations between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will also be held soon in line with the foreign countries’ suggestions. The pinpoint killing of Iran’s Maj. Gen. Quasem Soleimani by the US drone strike has threatened North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Some sources believe that this incident has proved that the technical standard of the so-called US ‘beheading operation’ had extremely advanced, and Kim Jong-un must be in fear now that he might be the next target, and that his fear will definitely affect the negotiations on the denuclearization of the country in the future.
