Karuizawa Town, led by Mayor Fujimaki, will play host to the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth which will be held on June 15-16. I as the Minister of the Environment and Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, will co-chair the meeting. The town is going through a great deal of preparation for the meeting, such as securing accommodations for several thousand visitors from abroad including ministerial VIPs and their attendants from 20 participating countries and invited countries, representatives of international organizations, journalists and others. In addition, the town needs to strengthen the security systems in its whole area to protect these visitors.
I thanked Mayor Fujimaki for his visit to my office despite his busy schedule. We exchanged our views to make a final adjustment on our preparation on both sides prior to the meeting. Since Karuizawa is very famous in and out of Japan, the outcome of discussions as well as individual countries’ views expressed in this meeting will be conveyed to many people in the world through mass media with a strong impact. After our dialogue was over, my sense of tension gradually increased for the upcoming meeting.
