The Japanese government adopted an action plan to take countermeasures against the issue of ‘marine plastic waste’.

At the meeting of the Cabinet members concerned with the environmental issues which was held on May 31, an action plan was adopted to take countermeasures against marine plastic waste. At present, in any countries in the world, huge volumes of plastic waste are flowing into the oceans. If no action is to be taken to reduce marine plastic waste, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish by 2050.

This action plan has been prepared by the Ministry of the Environment and other related organizations, based on their detailed analysis of the issue for the past half a year. It will be discussed at the Ministerial Meeting on Global Environment for Sustainable Growth which will be held concurrently with G20 Summit in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, on May 15-16 which I will chair.
