Dark clouds are gathering over the US-North Korea summit meeting which is scheduled to be held on June 12. North Korea’s former hostile diplomatic policy against the US and South Korea has been greatly changed into an appeasement policy since the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, and it has surprised the world. However, the scheduled ministerial meeting between North and South Korea, which was initially agreed by North Korea, has suddenly been canceled by North Korea accusing the US and South Korea of conducting joint military exercises.
This incident tells us that North Korea has disclosed its bad habit of breaking promises on its own free will, as we anticipated, and its habit will never change. Thus, it goes without saying that we cannot trust North Korea.
Meanwhile, the US is said to be preparing for the US-North Korea summit meeting by itself, expecting the meeting to be held in Singapore on June 12 as scheduled. We should continue to increase international pressure as well as take economic sanctions against North Korea. I firmly believe this is the right move. Even if North Korea resumes an appeasement policy toward the US and South Korea on its own free will, it will only withdraw the policy on its own free will again. Taking this into account, we should not ease any sanctions against North Korea.
